In 2001, Jay was just eight years old and decided he wanted to grow and sell a few pumpkins. With a little help from his parents and sister, he planted his first pumpkin crop, and before long it became his thing.

Jay has spent 26 seasons learning what grows best, trying new varieties, and growing his “little” pumpkin patch into something people in our community came to know and love. On Saturdays, you can usually find him at the Downtown Murray Farmers Market, selling pumpkins and sharing what he has grown.

Fast forward nearly twenty years to the fall of 2020, when I, Rachel, came into the picture. Jay and I met through mutual friends in my senior year at Murray State University. I knew very little about farming and could hardly keep a plant alive. But Jay had a pretty sweet way of introducing me to his pumpkin world. In the first few months of dating, I’d come home to find pumpkins or sunflowers waiting on my front porch that he had picked for me. Who wouldn’t fall for a pumpkin farmer after that?

By the next season, I was all in on this pumpkin thing. I traded some of my time with horses and lesson plans for learning how to plant, pick, sell, and decorate with pumpkins. As I became more involved, I began finding my own place within the farm. I’ve always loved creating beautiful spaces, so it wasn’t long before that creativity found its way into what we were growing.

I started dreaming about growing cut flowers and potted fall mums, and Jay was right there encouraging me to try it. Every time I came up with another idea, he somehow found a way to make it possible. He has always supported and believed in me before I really know what I am doing. What started as something I wanted to try has slowly become my own little piece of the farm, and Jay has been one of my biggest supporters every step of the way.

What started as Jay’s childhood project has now become something we get to grow together. We’ve spent many evenings talking about the vision for our farm and what we hope it will mean to the people in our community. We pray our farm is a place where families make memories and experience a little bit of the beauty and goodness God has given us.

Whether you visit us at the pumpkin patch in the fall, stop by the Farmers Market, or let us bring a little bit of fall to your own front porch, we hope you feel like you’re getting a little piece of something that means a whole lot to us.

We’d love to welcome you to our farm!

Our STORY

FAMILY is everything

Jay’s family has been such a big part of this journey, and we truly couldn’t do Jay’s Pumpkin Patch without them. The pumpkin patch is still located right in his parents’ front yard, the same place where this story began.

His sister, Delissa, and brother-in-law, Scott, also have a love for farming and run Mainord Family Farms in East Prairie, Missouri. We’re excited to continue finding ways to bring our farms together and hopefully share more of their fresh produce with you here at the patch in the years to come.

We’re incredibly thankful for our family. They are beyond supportive and are always willing to lend a hand to help us keep our family tradition growing.
